What Is Group Therapy?

Group therapy brings people together around shared experiences, and that shared space can be powerful. When you hear someone else put words to something you thought only you were dealing with, something shifts. That moment of recognition is called universality, and it’s one of the most healing things group therapy offers.

At Thrive Hive, group therapy is a structured, therapist-led experience where a small number of people gather regularly to learn skills, support each other, and grow together. Our DBT skills groups focus on building practical tools you can use in your everyday life, grounded in evidence-based methods and shaped by genuine peer connection.

Clients in Campbell and across the South Bay choose group therapy for the experience of being truly known by peers who get it, and for discovering they’re more capable than they realized.

What to Expect in Group Therapy

Group sessions at Thrive Hive are warm, structured, and skills-focused. Each session opens with a mindfulness practice to help everyone land in the room. From there, the group moves into skill-building together across four core DBT areas. You’ll practice these skills with real-life application, like using DEAR MAN to navigate a conversation with a parent or say “no” to peer pressure while keeping the relationship intact.

  • Mindfulness: tuning into your body and emotions in the present moment
  • Distress Tolerance: getting through difficult moments without making them harder
  • Emotion Regulation: understanding your feelings and learning to shift them when you're ready
  • Interpersonal Effectiveness: asking for what you need and setting boundaries that feel right

Why Group Therapy at Thrive Hive?

Every group therapy client begins with a 90-minute intake assessment. This helps us understand what you’re working on, answer your questions, and match you with the right group for your goals and stage of life.

Many clients also work with an individual therapist alongside their group, and that combination can be especially effective. Your individual therapist and group facilitator coordinate (with your consent) to make sure your care stays connected and consistent.

Our group facilitators are experienced, DBT-trained clinicians who are skilled at building group cultures where people feel safe enough to show up honestly.

  • 90-minute intake assessment before joining any group
  • Careful matching to the right group for your needs
  • Coordination between individual and group therapists
  • DBT-trained facilitators with group therapy experience
  • Identity-affirming, LGBTQIA+-inclusive spaces
  • In-person and virtual group options available across California

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if group therapy is right for me?
If you're wanting to build skills, feel less alone, or grow alongside peers who understand what you're going through, group therapy is worth considering. It works especially well alongside individual therapy, giving you the depth of one-on-one support plus the power of community.
Who else is in the group?
Groups are formed around shared experiences, life stage, or goals, so you'll be with people who have something meaningful in common with you. We keep groups small (usually 6 to 10 people) so everyone has space to participate and be known.
What about confidentiality?
Everything shared in group stays in group. All members agree to confidentiality as a condition of participation, and our facilitators hold this expectation clearly from the start.
What's the intake process like?
Before joining a group, you'll meet with a clinician for a 90-minute intake session. This helps us learn what you're working on, answer your questions, and make sure the group is a good fit for where you are right now.
Can my group facilitator also be my individual therapist?
Yes. If your situation calls for it, your group facilitator is available for consultations as needed or can establish an ongoing individual therapy relationship with you. Having the same clinician for both can deepen the work since they already understand your goals and your growth in the group setting.
Do you offer virtual groups?
Yes. Some of our groups are offered virtually so you can participate from anywhere in California. Check the group listings above for format details. Each group notes whether it's in-person, virtual, or hybrid.
