Why Bring Your Child to Therapy?

You know your child best, so you’re often the first to sense when something shifts. That can look like:

  • Bigger feelings, or bigger reactions, than usual
  • A worry, fear, or sadness that won't settle
  • Being more clingy than usual
  • Changes in sleep, like trouble settling or not wanting to sleep in their own bed
  • Stomachaches or other physical complaints
  • A change at school, at home, or with friends
  • Pulling away from people or activities they used to enjoy

Therapy gives them a warm, unhurried place to feel understood, and gives you a partner in figuring out what helps. You don’t need to have it all figured out to begin.

Common Challenges We Help Children Work Through

We support children working through a wide range of experiences, including:

How We Work With Children

Young children make sense of their world through play. It’s how they show us what’s happening inside long before they have the words. So our work with children is playful, gentle, and paced to where each child is developmentally, from the early years through about age 11. Depending on what your child needs, that can include:

  • Play-based sessions, where toys, art, and stories become the language of the work
  • Emotion-regulation skills, like naming big feelings and learning to ride them out
  • A developmentally attuned approach that honors what's typical for your child's age
  • Attachment-focused work that helps your child feel safe and connected

Because children grow within their families, much of the change happens in the relationships around them too.

Parents Are Part of the Work

Children’s therapy works best when the people closest to them are part of it. A child’s world includes everyone who loves them, so as your child builds new skills, we help you build matching ones at home, and healing goes further the more everyone’s pulling together. With your permission, we’re also glad to connect with the other important adults around them, like teachers, grandparents, or other caregivers in their daily life, so your child feels supported everywhere they go.

If you’d like more support in your own parenting, our Parent Support services are here for that. And when the whole family is navigating a change together, Therapy for Families & Parents may be a good fit.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does child therapy take?
It varies from child to child, and depends on what you're working on and whether there's ongoing stress or trauma. Many children make meaningful progress when the important adults in their life are part of the process, and we'll keep checking in so the pace always fits your child.
Do parents need to be involved?
Yes. It looks different for every family, from regular check-ins to simply staying in the loop. We'll shape it around what works for your household, and with your okay we may also connect with your child's school or caregivers.
What ages do you work with?
Our core focus is early childhood, and we work well with children through about age 11. Around 6th or 7th grade, most kids are a better fit for a therapist who specializes in teens. See Therapy for Teens & Young Adults. Not sure where your child fits? We'll help you figure it out.
Is it play-based?
Yes. For children, play is the language of therapy, and toys, art, and stories are how we help them express and work through what's going on.
Can sessions be virtual?
It depends on your child's age and needs. Some younger children do best in person, and others do well online. We'll talk it through during your consultation and recommend what will help most.
How do we get started?
Just book a free 15-minute consultation. We'll learn what's going on and match your family with the therapist who fits best.
